ARPOADOR COLLECTION
Arpoador Kitetrip: A Kitesurf Immersion in Brazil
Twice a year, in August and in November, a group lands in São Luís with one shared goal: to learn kitesurfing, or to finally break through, in one of the most consistent wind corridors on the planet. The Arpoador Kitetrip is AR.Co's immersion in the village of Arpoador, in Tutóia, Brazil, designed to turn a first contact with the kite into a safe, progressive and hard to forget journey.
The recipe has three ingredients that rarely come together: shallow warm water, easterly trade winds between 18 and 30 knots from July to January, and a sea almost empty of riders. It is the environment instructors describe as ideal for fast progression, and one that international downwind operators already treat as a mandatory stop on the Brazilian coast.
Where this corridor is
Arpoador is a fishing village on the coast of Tutóia, in Maranhão, inside the stretch known internationally as the Rota das Emoções, the Route of Emotions. Its position explains the growing reputation in Brazilian kitesurfing: to the east lies the Parnaíba Delta, the only open sea delta in the Americas, with 73 islands; to the west begin the Pequenos Lençóis and, further on, the National Park dunes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village sits exactly in the middle, and you can ride out in both directions.
The playground seen from the water
Look at this coastline from a board and you understand why the world's best known downwind routes pass through here. In front of the village, a sandbank holds a shallow flat where students stand with their feet on the bottom and water at their shins, the perfect setting for the first waterstarts. Just ahead, Ronquinha opens a long wave for those ready to surf with the kite, and Praia do Amor appears in the sport's guides as one of the country's good kitewave spots.
Heading west, the corridor delivers the classic run to Atins: 45 km of downwind crossing river and sea on the same tack at Paulino Neves, mirror flat channels, the Barro Vermelho pit stop and wind turbines on the horizon. To the east, the chapter is the Delta: international operators riding this coast publish legs of 50 km between Caju Island and Arpoador and 65 km between Arpoador and Atins, with wind quoted at 18 to 35 knots and a 95 percent ride probability in season. None of those numbers is required for the immersion, but they all say the same thing: whoever learns here, learns in the middle of one of the world's great wind corridors.
The road that opens the trip
The Kitetrip begins on land. From São Luís to Tutóia it is around 330 km of asphalt, in a coordinated convoy along the BR-402 through Bacabeira, Rosário, Morros, Icatu, Barreirinhas and Paulino Neves, where the road skirts the first dune fields. From Tutóia to the village, the final stretch runs along the coast and follows the tide, in a vehicle with proper traction. Arriving by the beach is the first sign that the destination is not a resort: it is a real village, at the end of Alameda dos Velejadores.
The school and the method
During the immersion, courses are run by Kitesurf Life, an IKO accredited school, the sport's international certification, with qualified instructors and a standardized method. The group is split by level at the technical meeting on the first evening in the village: those who have never held a bar start with kite control and body drag; those already riding work on edging, transitions and the first meters upwind. Progression is individual, but the routine is collective, and that is what makes it an immersion: everyone grows in the same wind, at the same table, under the same sunset.
The itinerary
Day one is the arrival in São Luís, with individual flights through the day, the forming of logistics groups, hotel check-in and, at the end of the afternoon, a light visit to the historic center for the opening briefing. On day two, the convoy leaves early for Arpoador, with a technical stop on the way, a welcome reception and lunch in the village; in the afternoon, the first guided experience in the Pequenos Lençóis and, at the end of the day, the technical meeting with the instructors.
From then on, the wind sets the pace: mornings and afternoons of lessons and practice on the flat, windows for the Pequenos Lençóis and the Delta, and nights in the silence of the village, under a sky free of light pollution.
Why Arpoador
The route has a history. Klauber Figueiredo, founder of AR.Co, has been riding since 2013 and spent a decade organizing kite events in Trancoso, Bahia, and stacking long distance downwinders across Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão. In 2016 he reached Arpoador. "I was immediately convinced I was looking at one of the most special places in the world for kitesurfing," he says. From trips with friends came the current format: qualified professionals, a consistent method and the region's most striking scenery in a single itinerary.
Dates and booking
The immersions happen every year in August and in November, when the wind season is at its peak. Spots follow the scale of the village: few, with lodging in Arpoador Collection houses and a dedicated concierge from the landing in São Luís to the last session on the water.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to ride before joining?
No. The immersion was designed for beginners and for riders breaking through. Kitesurf Life's IKO courses start from zero, and intermediate riders progress on their own track with the same support.
When are the next editions?
Two windows per year, in August and in November, at the peak of the wind season. Exact dates for each edition are released by the concierge and on AR.Co's channels.
Why learn in Arpoador rather than somewhere else?
Because of a rare combination: a shallow flat where you can stand, wind of 18 to 30 knots almost daily in season and very few riders sharing the space. Less waiting, more time with the kite in the air.
What should I bring?
Light clothes, a UV shirt, sunscreen and commitment. Kite equipment and water and land support are part of the immersion's structure.
