How to get from Parnaíba to Vila Arpoador, Tutóia (Maranhão, Brazil)

It is also the only route that arrives via the Parnaíba Delta, the only open-sea delta in the Americas. This guide covers flights, the overland route, the helicopter option and what to do along the way.

Parnaíba airport (PHB) is gaining new connections year after year. It is currently served by LATAM with flights from Fortaleza, and from November 2026 Azul resumes its route from Belo Horizonte (Confins) on Wednesdays and Saturdays, putting more than 60 Brazilian destinations just one connection away from the Delta coast. For international travellers, or those flying from cities without a direct flight, Fortaleza is the natural gateway to the route.

From Parnaíba airport to Tutóia it is 121 km of tarmac all the way, crossing the border between Piauí and Maranhão where the Parnaíba River opens into five branches and forms the 73 islands of the Delta. Tutóia is the last place to refuel.

From Tutóia to Vila Arpoador, the tarmac ends: the final 13 km follow the beach heading north-west, passable only by 4x4 and within the tide window. This is the stretch that shields the village from through traffic and turns the arrival into part of the experience.

A private helicopter charter covers the journey flying over the mouth of the Delta and the Tutóia coastline, landing in the village. It is the option for those who want to shorten the journey, or begin their trip watching the river meet the sea from above. This 309,000-hectare federally protected area is home to mangroves, tidal creeks, sandbanks that shift with every tide and the scarlet ibis flight at dusk, when hundreds of red birds return in formation to roost.

The Delta, on the other hand, has no season: excursions run all year round, governed by the tide rather than the calendar. In December, there is also Réveillon Duna, the village's New Year's Eve festival, when Vila Arpoador 's few houses are booked months in advance.
