How to Get from Parnaíba to Arpoador, Maranhão

The shortest way into Arpoador comes from the east. There are 134 km between Parnaíba airport, in Piauí, and the fishing village at the entrance to the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses: 121 km of asphalt to Tutóia and a final 13 km on the beach in a 4x4.

It is also the only access that arrives alongside the Parnaíba Delta, the only open sea delta in the Americas. This guide covers the flights, the overland route, the helicopter option and what to see on the way.

Flights to Parnaíba

Parnaíba airport (PHB) gains connections year after year. Today it is served by LATAM with flights from Fortaleza, and from November 2026 Azul resumes its route from Belo Horizonte Confins on Wednesdays and Saturdays, putting more than 60 Brazilian destinations one connection away from the Delta coastline.

For international travelers, Fortaleza works as the natural gateway to the route.

The overland route

From Parnaíba airport to Tutóia it is 121 km of asphalt end to end, crossing the border between Piauí and Maranhão in the region where the Parnaíba River splits into five arms and forms the 73 islands of the Delta. Tutóia is the last place to refuel.

From Tutóia to Arpoador the asphalt ends: 13 km on the beach heading northwest, driven only in a 4x4 and within the tide window. It is the stretch that protects the village from through traffic and turns the arrival into part of the experience.

By helicopter

A helicopter charter covers the route flying over the mouth of the Delta and the Tutóia coastline, landing in the village. It is the option for those who want a shortcut, or who want to start the trip seeing the river meet the ocean from above. The concierge quotes charters on demand, according to date and number of passengers.

The Delta on the way

Entering from the east has a bonus: the Parnaíba Delta is at the door. The 309,000 hectare federal protected area holds mangroves, tidal creeks, sandbanks that redraw themselves with every tide and the scarlet ibis evening flight, when hundreds of red birds return in line to their roost.

You can add the boat trip on arrival, or book a full day from Arpoador with local fishermen and guides. Travelers doing the full circuit usually enter through Parnaíba and leave through São Luís, or the other way around: Arpoador is the middle of the route, not the end of it.

Arrive without thinking about logistics

The Arpoador Collection Concierge organizes everything from the moment you land: private 4x4 transfer from Parnaíba airport to the door of the house, with drivers who know the route and the tide, or a helicopter charter with a welcome on landing. The team is waiting, luggage is handled and the house is ready.

When to travel

The wind season runs from July to January, with easterly trade winds between 18 and 30 knots, when Arpoador lives its kitesurfing months. The lagoons of the Pequenos Lençóis reach their highest levels between June and September, after the rainy season, and from July to September wind and full lagoons happen at the same time.

The Delta, on the other hand, has no season: boat trips run all year, governed by the tide rather than the calendar. The scarlet ibis flight repeats every single evening, which makes this route a good choice in any month. In December, add Duna Festival, the village's New Year gathering, when Arpoador's few houses are booked months in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest airport to Arpoador?

Parnaíba (PHB), 134 km from the village. It is the shortest overland access, with asphalt to Tutóia and a final 13 km on the beach in a 4x4.

Do you need a 4x4 to get there?

Only on the final stretch. Any car reaches Tutóia on asphalt; from there the road is the beach, and a 4x4 with a local driver is mandatory.

Can you visit the Parnaíba Delta on the way?

Yes, and it is the great argument for this route. The boat trip can be done on arrival, from Parnaíba or Tutóia, or as a full day from Arpoador, always by boat with local guides.

What if my flight lands in São Luís?

That works too: 343 km from the west, passing Barreirinhas and the edge of the Pequenos Lençóis. The concierge recommends the best gateway for your itinerary.
